Introduced in March 2009, the iPod shuffle (3rd Generation) included Apple's new VoiceOver feature. With the click of a button (most controls were now integrated into the earphone cord), the song title, artist, and playlist title were spoken aloud. This was accomplished via the Host OS's text-to-speech capabilities. As a result, Windows and Mac OS users got different voices for the VoiceOver feature.

The iPod shuffle (3rd Generation) was initially available in matte silver and black, with 4 GB of memory, for $79. In September 2009, a 2 GB model was added, for $59, and both capacities were made available in a total of five colors. A $99 4 GB stainless steel model was also available exclusively from the Apple Store.
